Tecomella undulata (Sm.) Seem.

This species is native to Arabian Peninsula, extending to SW Iran and NW India; introduced and cultivated elswhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Tecomella occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

A deciduous or nearly evergreen tree ; up to 2 . 5(-7) m tall , with rough greyish brown bark . Stems with drooping branches ; branches minutely stellate-hairy when young . Leaves simple , opposite , 22−75 x 5−15 mm , pale green , linear-oblong to elliptic oblong , apex obtuse or emarginate , base tapering , margins entire , undulate ; petiole 5−10 mm , pale yellow-green . Inflorescences in 1−8-flowered corymbose-racemes ; bracts linear , stellate pubescent ; bracteoles 2 ; pedicel 7−12 mm , pubescent . Flowers large , showy , orange , trumpet shaped ; calyx 8−12 mm , campanulate , unequally 5-lobed ; lobes obtuse , apiculate , minutely and sparsely glandular-pubescent ; corolla bright orange to orange , 50−60 mm , funnel-shaped ; tube 28−30 mm , lobes 20−25 mm , suborbicular ; stamens 4 ; staminode shorter than stamens ; disc cupular , 5-lobed ; style beyond the stamens ; stigmas 2 , compressed . Fruit capsule , 17−34 x 1−1 . 2 cm , linear-oblong , laterally compressed , slightly curved , apex beaked with 20 mm broad wing . Seeds apically winged . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .

This tree is propagated by root suckers. • Root cuttings: For root cutting propagation, plant them in trays filled with a ratio of 1 peat: 2 perlites: 1/2 compost. • Leave cuttings in a cool shaded area under mist system to keep them wet. • Stem rooting can vary within 1–3 months, with average rooting around 2%. Average success around 91%.

الاستخدامات


Used as ornamental tree and for shadding. The leaves are used as fodder for goats. (Ref. Flora of Oman).
