Annual herbs ; up to 30 cm high . Stems erect to spreading , branched from base , greyish , strigose with disc-based hairs . Leaves alternate , 4–9(–12) × 2–6 cm , somewhat fleshy , oblong to lanceolate-oblong , base cuneate , apex obtuse , margins obscurely dentate , hispid to strigose with disc-based hairs . Inflorescences solitary , axillary ; pedicels ± 2 mm . Flowers purplish blue to blue ; calyx 1 . 5–2 . 5 mm , increasing to 3 mm at fruiting , 5-lobed ; lobes free , lanceolate , densely strigose inside and outside ; corolla blue or purple , 2–2 . 5 mm , tubular with appendages at throat ; densely short strigose outside ; limb 5-lobed ; lobes rounded ; appendages pilose ; stamens 5 , included ; ovary 4-lobed ; style gynobasic , stigmas capitate .
