Trichodesma africanum (L.) Sm.

Erect branched annual or biennial herb ; up to 40 cm tall , harshly scabrid . Stems erect , branched from the base , rigid , greyish-green , covered with white tubercule-based long stiff spreading hairs , becoming glabrescent . Leaves opposite , 20–35 × 9–9 mm , dull greyish green , ovate-lanceolate to ovate-oblong to linear , base rounded to cuneate , apex acute or obtuse , margins entire , spreading tubercule-based hairy ; petiole up to 20 mm ; upper leaves sessile . Inflorescences in lax few-flowered cymes , nodding ; pedicels variable in length , developing later . Flowers whitish or bluish ; calyx 6–9 mm , up to 10 mm in fruit , 5-lobed to base , lobes ovate-lanceolate , base truncate to subcordate , acute , hairy mainly on margins and nerves ; corolla whitish or bluish , sometimes with purple blotches in centre , tubular , tube as long as calyx , 5-lobed above with spreading lobes ; lobes ovate , acuminate ; stamens 5 , attached at the throat of the corolla tube , anthers ± 10 mm long , densely hairy , with long ...
