Brassica oleracea L.

This species is native to Atlantic coasts of Great Britain, France and Spain; introduced and cultivated world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 3 species of Brassica found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual , biennial or perennial herb ; up to 2 . 5 m tall , glabrous throughout . Stems erect , smooth , ± woody . Leaves few (in comparison to cultivars) , fleshy , glabrous , lobed , blue-green ; lower leaves stalked , large , up to 50 x 30 cm , ± rounded at apex , ± cordate at base , with irregular wavy margins , petiolate ; upper leaves sessile or semi-amplexicaul , entire , rounded at the base . Inflorescences borne on flowering stems of 20-40 individual flowers . Flowers pale yellow ; sepals oblong , erect and connivent ; petals bright yellow or white , clawed , 15-20 mm ; stamens 6 . Fruits siliqua , 50-100 x 4-5 mm , erect-ascending , linear , short , beaked , round in cross-section . Seeds 1 . 5-2 mm . in diam . , dark brown , globose . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
