Brassica rapa L.

This species is native to Central & E Mediterranean, extending to Iran, Arabian Peninsula and NE Tropical Africa; introduced and cultivated elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 3 species of Brassica found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual or biennial herb ; up to 1 . 5 m tall , with a swollen wide and tuberous root . Stems erect , small , branched , glabrous or hispidulous below . Leaves ribbed , branch off the top of the stem ; basal leaves stalked , up to 30 x 10 cm , light green , bristly , lyrate-pinnatifid , petiolate ; upper leaves sessile , entire , amplexicaul , ± glaucous . Inflorescences in terminal racemes . Flowers bright yellow ; sepals 4 , yellow-green , spreading ; petals 4 , yellow , clawed , 6–10 mm ; stamens 6 ; ovary 20–30 ovules . Fruit siliqua , curved , erect , slightly flattened with a long , tapering beak . Seeds 1–5–2 mm . in diam . , blackish or reddish-brown . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
