Zilla spinosa (L.) Prantl

This species is native to Northern Africa and the Middle East. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is one species of Zilla occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Shrub ; up to 1 m tall . Stems erect , much-branched , spiny , leafless , glaucous , older branches becoming spiny at tips . Leaves up to 30×4 mm , few on the stems , falling soon , oblong , margins entire or irregularly toothed ; basal leaves short-lived , lyrate-pinnatifid . Inflorescences ascending , in few-flowered racemes . Flowers purple to pink-blue with darker veins ; sepals saccate ; petals 15–17 mm , purple to pink-blue with darker veins . Fruit silicula , 5–10 mm in diameter , globose with a spiny beak , smooth or verrucose , woody when mature ; beak 3-5 mm . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
