Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.

This species is native to Costa Rica, extending to S Tropical America; introduced and cultivated elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is one species of Ananas occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Herbaceous perennial , up to 2 m tall or more with spirally arranged leaves and shallow roots . Stems short , stocky , circular in cross-section , up to 50 cm long and 8 cm wide , club-shaped . Leaves 30-50 in dense rosettes , stiff , tough , narrow , sword-shaped , evergreen , gray-green ; individual leaves up to 1 m long by 4 cm wide with spiny margins . Inflorescences borne on a scape (stalk) up to 50 cm long and subtended by bracts . Flowers purple or red , (50-200) ; sepals 3 ; petals 3 , small purple or red . Fruit up to 30 cm long , seedless , juicy syncarp , crowned with 20-30 leafy bracts ; flesh white to yellow . Seeds undeveloped . (POWO ; 2023) .
