An erect , succulent shrub ; up to 1 m tall . Stems much-branched , with flattened , fleshy segments ; segments green or bluish-green , elliptic or obovate , somewhat glaucous , sparsely covered in groups of 1-7 sharp , yellow spines (2-4 cm long) . Leaves minute , slightly curved , conical , quickly shed (i . e . caducous) . Inflorescences solitary , borne along the margins of the stem segments . Flowers 6-8 cm across , bright yellow , hermaphrodite , epigynous , actinomorphic ; sepals 4 , green ; petals (petaloids)12 , 25-50 mm long , numerous ; stamens numerous , unequal ; ovary inferior . Fruit berry , fleshy , pyriform , subglobose or obovoid , green turns purple-red as they mature , with tufts of small barbed bristles on their surface ; reddish or purplish coloured pulp , many seeds .
