Succulent shrub or tree , up to 4 m tall , often with a cylindrical trunk and joints , elliptic to narrowly obovate , flattened , greyish-green spines . Stems (cladodes) thick , erect or sprawling , succulent , oblong to spatulate . Leaves 3-4 mm long , subulate , minute , early deciduous . Inflorescences solitary . Flowers conspicuous , bowl-shaped ; perianth spreading , yellow , orange or red , longer than the style and stamens ; ovary cylindrical , 3 . 5–5 cm . long . Fruits berries , ellipsoidal or obovoid , succulent , pale green to deep red when ripe , bright red/purple or white/yellowish pulp . Seeds many , tiny , hard . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .
