A succulent , thorny shrub or tree ; up to 3–4 m tall , with several branches and profusely expanded crown . Stems oval to elongate , shiny green ; joints usually narrowly obovate , flattened . Inflorescences solitary . Leaves minute , deciduous ; spines straight , in groups of 1-2 or 3 , brown . Flowers dark yellow with a reddish median stripe . Fruit fleshy , conical to obovoid , pear-shaped , 5–7 . 5 cm long , reddish-purple , bristly , spineless . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .
