A deciduous , bushy shrub or small tree ; up to 4 m tall , with stipular spines . Stems scrambling , much branched , glabrous with leafless branches , becoming spiny with age ; bark greeish-yellow , smooth . Leaves often leafless except on young shoots and barren branchlets , small , oblong to lanceolate , sparsely pubescent , plicate ; spines paired , pale brown , straight or hooked . Inflorescences solitary , axillary or in clusters , on long peduncles on short lateral branches . Flowers showy , usually orange-red ; sepals 4 , unequal , with 3 shallowly boat-shaped , petaloid ; petals 4 , connivent ; stamens 8-20 , exserted ; ovary borne on a 10-15 mm long gynophore . Fruit berry , globose , pubescent , fleshy , green turning deep red when ripe , many-seeded . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1)
