Much branched , perennial subshrub ; up to 20-50 cm tall . Stems ash grey , twisted and knotted at the nodes , white scruffy , becoming glabrescent with age . Leaves in clusters at the nodes , linear to elliptic to terete , fleshy . Inflorescences pedunculate densely crowded cymose head . Flowers pentamerous , bisexual , yellowish green ; sepals ovate , free , with a thick green midrib prolonged into a soft spine-tipped awn , less than 2 mm in fruit ; petals white , shorter than the sepals ; stamens 5 ; filaments dilated and united at the base to form a ring , subperigynous ; anthers dorsifixed ; ovary stipitate , free , globose , unilocular , 2-ovuled .
