Monoecious . Submerged , free-floating , rootless , perennial herb ; up to 2 m . Stems pale green to reddish purple , jointed , glabrous , fragile , often dividing into smaller segments . Leaves bright green , whorled 5-14 , dichotomously branched twice , linear , margins usually with many prominent teeth , coarse-textured . Inflorescences in the axils of leaves . Flowers unisexual , sessile , the male and female flowers at separate nodes ; male flowers numerous in a whorl , 1-3 per node ; female flowers fewer in a whorl , 1 per node . Fruit dark green or reddish brown , ovoid or ellipsoid , compressed , smooth , with two basal spines and the persistent style forming an apical spine . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
