Trailing or climbing , annual herb . Stems prostrate or scandent , up to 10 m . long , ± villous , glabrescent . Leaves leaf-blade 5–20 , ovate or narrowly ovate in outline , cordate , ± hairy (especially on the veins beneath) , becoming scabrid-punctate , usually deeply palmately 3–5-lobed , petiolate ; tendrils usually bifid . Inflorescences solitary , borne in leaf axils . Flowers male flowers ± villous , pale green , lanceolate ; petals yellow , obovate , rounded , apiculate ; female flowers ellipsoid or subglobose , villous . Fruit subglobose or ellipsoid , green or yellowish , concolorous or variously mottled or striped ; flesh white or red , watery , usually not bitter . Seeds flat , ovate-elliptic in outline , smooth or slightly rough , dark or pale coloured , often mottled , sometimes bordered . (Ref . POWO ; 2021) .
