Monoecious . Scandent herb or soft woody climber , up to 4 m long , with tuberous root . Stems glabrous , with a papery bark . Leaves ovate to reniform , deeply 3-5-lobed , lobes 3-lobulate , finely shortly hispid , base cordate , margins ± dentate-sinuate , petiolate ; tendrils simple . Inflorescence peduncles 1-6(-15) cm long . Flowers 2 mm across , velvet-hairy ; male flowers several in pedunculate clusters ; female flowers solitary in the axils of leaves ; sepals oblong-lanceolate ; petals oblong , greenish-yellow to pale yellow . Fruit glabrous , ovoid or ellipsoid , rostrate , with a slender apical beak , green with dark to pale green spots , becoming red when ripe except for the green cup at the base .
