Monoecious . Perennial herbs , up to 4 m long , with woody rootstock . Stems prostrate or scandent , patent-hispid ; tendrils simple . Leaves ovate in outline , 3-lobed , base sagittate-cordate , margin dentate , scabrid . Inflorescences in crowded axillary heads . Flowers yellow ; male flowers on 1–3 mm . long pedicels ; female flowers 5–10 in each fascicle . Fruit 2–8 in axillary clusters , rarely solitary , globose , glabrous , smooth and shiny , dark red when mature . Seeds ovate , c . twice as long as broad . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
