Slender , much-branched climber , perennial herb with fleshy rootstock . Stems climbing or trailing , up to 5 m long or more ; young stems herbaceous , glabrous , becoming thickened and white-dotted on the ridges when older . Leaves simple , alternate , palmately 3-lobed , base cordate , lobes ovate to elliptic , margins speculate , scabrid , petiolate ; tendrils 2-fid . Inflorescence monoecious . Flowers white ; male flowers 4-5 in sessile clusters , axillary ; sepals linear ; petals white with green nerves ; female flowers solitary , 1–5 in the axils of leaves . Fruit solitary or in clusters of 2–5 on long stalks , subglobose , glabrous , green with silvery white longitudinal stripes or markings , turns bright red with maturity , smell unpleasant .
