Climbing or trailing annual herb , up to 4 . 5 m long . Stems herbaceous , prostrate or scandent , softly villous . Leaves broadly ovate-reniform or suborbicular in outline , cordate , sinuate-toothed , apiculate , hairy , obscurely palmately 5-9-lobed , petiolate ; tendrils bifid . Inflorescence monoecious . Flowers male flowers solitary on 75–310 mm . long peduncles ; sepals triangular-lanceolate or lanceolate ; petals white with green veins , opening in the evening , broadly obovate , apiculate ; female flowers on ± 60–70 mm . long stalks , sweet-scented . Fruit subglobose to cylindrical , commonly bottle-shaped or swollen at ends , green , uniformly coloured or mottled , yellow-brown when dry . Seeds oblong , compressed , slightly tapered , slightly 2-horned on the shoulders at the broader end , smooth . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .

Commonly added as a vegetable to the traditionally made sauce 'maraq'. Sometimes used to prepare sweet dish, where milk with pinch of sugre is added later, usually eaten with Omani bread 'khubz amani'. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
