Annual climbing or trailing herb , up to 1 . 5 m long . Stems prostrate or scandent , up to 1 . 5 m or more , finely rather sparsely crispate-pubescent . Leaves Leaf-blade broadly ovate to circular in outline , cordate , usually somewhat pubescent , palmately 3–5-lobed to about the middle or beyond ; tendrils simple . Inflorescence monoecious , solitary . Flowers yellow , (sometimes white) with a dark centre ; male flowers solitary ; female flowers solitary . Fruit orange-yellow , beaked , warty and poisonous but the red jelly covering the seeds is edible , dehiscent into 3 valves . Seeds sheathed in bright red pulp , ovate-oblong . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .
