Deciduous , woody shrub or small tree ; up to 2 m tall or more . Stems with alternate spine-tipped branchlets ; bark grey to reddish-brown , peeling . Leaves alternate on young growth , fasciculate on the older branches , in tufts , sessile , 5-22 x 3-5 cm , obovate , rounded apex , long cuneate base , entire margin , glabrous to sparsely pubescent ; petiole to 5 mm . Inflorescences cymes reduced to a subsessile solitary cyathium , or clustered in terminal 2–5-branched umbels . Flowers cyathia with funnel- to cup-shaped involucres ; glands 5 , spreading , saucer- or funnel-shaped , yellowish green ; male flowers numerous , bracteoles laciniate ; female flowers with subsessile ovary , densely puberulous . Fruit capsule , 3-4(-6) mm in diameter , subglobose , subsessile or shortly pedicellate , obtusely 3-lobed , pubescent or glabrous , erect .
