Euphorbia helioscopia L. subsp. helioscopia

This subspecies is native to Macaronesia, N Africa, Temperate Eurasia, extending to Indian Subcontinent; introduced elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 28 species of Euphorbia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Monoecious . Somewhat fleshy annual herb ; up to 25 cm long . Stems erect , simple or occasionally 2-3-branched from the base , sparsely pubescent with fine hairs . Leaves alternate , sessile , 10-30 x 8-11 mmn obovate-spatulate , apex obtuse to retuse , base tapering , margin minutely crenate ; floral leaves opposite or whorled , ovate , rounded at base , finely toothed . Inflorescences composed of 5 umbel-like cyathia , subtended by a whorl of 5 leaves ; peduncle up to 30 mm . Flowers cyathia , unisexual , small ; glands yellow-green . Fruit capsule , 4-5 mm , 3-celled , pale green , glabrous . Seeds obovate to ovate in outline , circular in cross-section , dark brown to orange-brown . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

Not used traditionally. However, known causes eye burn when touched by hand already touched the plant, which in turn reflected in its vernacular name 'me'awarah'. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
