Shrub spiky succulent ; up to 125 cm tall . Stems with 10–30 branches , ascending , 4–5 cm in diameter , dark green to gray , only weakly strangled , with 5(–6) ribs ; spines up to 1 . 5 cm long reddish-brown , growing under the scars of fallen leaves or under flowers , and often small paired spines on the side of the scars . Leaves 2–3 x 4–5 mm , broadly triangular , soon deciduous . Inflorescences cyathia in triplets at the tips of branches on peduncles 2 . 5–3 mm long . Flowers cyathia ; glands 5 , transversely elliptical , c . 3 , 5 mm wide ; male flowers glabrous , clustered in panicles of up to 15 , with a yellow thread up to 2 mm long ; central cyathium is male and blooms earlier than the lateral cyathia with female flowers .
