Jatropha spinosa Vahl

This species is native to Djibouti, extending to Somalia and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 4 known species of Jatropha found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Shrub ; up to 2 m tall , glabrous . Stems with entirely glabrous branches . Leaves mostly clustered on short shoots , 1–6 x 1–6 cm , shiny green , ± deeply palmately 3-5 lobed , with shallowly cordate base , subentire to sharply dentate ; stipules transformed into rigid spines ; petiole 1–4 cm long . Inflorescences pedunculate , glabrous , cymes mostly terminal , few-flowered . Flowers monoecious . Male flowers: calyx-lobes 2 mm long , obtuse , entire , glabrous ; petals c . 4 mm long . Female flowers: ovary glabrous ; styles united at base , stigmas bifid , thickened . Fruit capsule , c . 1 cm long , rugulose . Seeds c . 8 x 4 mm , brownish , with a fimbriate caruncle . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
