Manihot esculenta Crantz

This species is native to W South America, extending to Brazil; introduced and cultivated world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Manihot occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

A shrub ; up to 5 m high , glabrous . Stems with little-branches ; young shoots glaucous , greenish grey ; bark smooth , often reddish . Leaves alternate , simple , 6–14(–17) x 1–6 cm , deeply lobed , often not peltate , lobes oblanceolate , apex acuminate , margin entire . Inflorescences branched raceme , 8–11 cm long . Flowers monoecious . Male flower: pedicel 5 mm long , decurved ; calyx cylindric-conic in bud , tube 6 mm long , lobes 6 x 4 mm , greenish orange and crimson , sometimes dark-veined . Female flower: pedicel 7 mm extending to 25 mm ; sepals 10 x 5 mm ; styles and stigmas looking like bunch of grapes . Fruit capsule , 15–17 x 15 mm , ellipsoidal to subglobose , rugulose , 6-winged , wings undulate-subcrenate . Seeds 11 x 5 . 5 x 3 . 5 mm , ± 5-sided , pale grey , sometimes mottled ; caruncle 3 mm wide . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
