Woody base , spiny , erect , perennial subshrub ; up to 2 m tall , deep-rooted . Stems erect to ascending , lateral branches becoming spinescent , glabrous to pubescent . Leaves 10-20 x 3-8 mm , obovate to oblong-elliptic , apex apiculate , obtuse or emarginated , base rounded , margins entire , glabrous or pubescent , petiolate . Inflorescences in lax axillary racemes . Flowers red or purplish-red ; sepals 2-2 . 5 mm , teeth minute , glabrous ; petals 6-8 mm ; stamens 9+1 .
