Astragalus crenatus Schult.

This species is native to N Africa, Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, and eastwards to SW Pakistan and Afghanistan. (Ref. POWO; 2022). There are 8 species of Astragalus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 30 cm tall , commonly with many branches . Stems ascending to decumbent to prostrate , glabrous to sparsely pubescent , with black and white hairs , branches from the base ; hairs basifixed . Leaves stipulate , imparipinnate with 7-11 pairs of leaflets ; leaflets 7-10 x 1 . 5 mm , linear to oblong , emarginated at the apex , tapering at the base , entire margins , sparsely pubescent , petiolate . Inflorescences in 1-5-flowered terminal racemes . Flowers calyx ± 3 mm , black and white pubescent , lobes acute , pubescent with black and white hairs ; corolla ± 5 mm , violet . Fruit pods , sessile , 20-50 , curved , glabrous , reticulately ridged , beak hooked , partly bilocular , 14-20-seeded , pale green to straw-yellow when mature . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

الاستخدامات


Not used traditionally. The vernacular names 'qarn al kharouf' and 'abu qrainah refers to the similarity of the fruit to animal's horn. The name 'halaj' is literally means "ring" or "ear-ring" which also referred to fruit shape. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
