Ceratonia oreothauma Hillc., G.P.Lewis & Verdc. subsp. oreothauma

This subspecies is native to S Arabian Peninsula and N Somalia. (Ref. POWO; 2022). There is only one species of Ceratonia occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Monoecious or dioecious , small evergreen tree ; up to 4 m tall , with gnarled branches and rough bark . Stems branched , erect to ascending ; young branches ± densely appressed pubescent . Leaves paripinnate with 3-5 pairs of leaflets ; leaflets 12-16 x 3-4 mm , alternate or subopposite , elliptic to oblong-elliptic , acute tip , base tapering , glabrous and viscid above , puberulous beneath . Inflorescences in long racemes , sessile . Flowers unisexual ; calyx 5-lobed , pubescent ; petals absent ; male flowers: racemes 40-50 mm , stamens 5 with 3-4 mm long filaments ; female flowers: staminodes minute , stigma u-shaped . Fruit pod , 1 . 5–10 x 1–1 . 3 cm , slightly curved , thick , reddish-brown , 1–13-seeded , constricted between the seeds when dry . Seeds 5–6 . 5 x 3 . 5–4 . 5 mm , oblong to ovate , embedded in pulp . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

This tree is propagated by seeds. Steps to follow: • Sow collected seeds in seed tray filled with a ratio of 3 peat moss: 1 compost, 5 cm apart. • Irrigate the seed tray three times a week. • Germination commences from 4–9 days onward. Seed germination of this species is good and average germination is around 32%.

The nutritious pods and foliage used as fodder. The wood was used to form the foundation of the old houses. (Ref. Oman Botani Garden). In Omani studies: In Oman Plant Red Data Book, Patzelt (2015) wrote that: "Local people use the pds as feed for their goats". (Ref. Oman Plant Red Data Book; 2015).
