Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. ex DC.

This species is native to SE Asia; introduced and cultivated in warm tropical countries. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.2). There is only one species of Dalbergia occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Large tree ; up to 20 m tall , with fissured , rough bark , rounded crown . Stems with droop branches , without thorns ; young branch velvet-hairy . Leaves imparipinnate , with 3-5 leaflets ; leaflets alternate , 3-6 x 3-6 cm , ovate , apex acute to acuminate , base rounded , leathery , glabrous . Inflorescences in axillary panicles . Flowers creamy-white , fragrant , ± sessile ; calyx 3-4 mm , greenish-yellow , glabrous ; corolla ± 8 mm . Fruit pod , 3-8 x 1-2 cm , oblong , flattened , thin , strap-like , papery with prominent veins , 1-3-seeded . Seeds 8 to 10 mm long , bean-shaped , flattened . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

This tree is propagated by stem cuttings and suckers. Steps to follow: • For stem cutting propagation, use softwood, semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings with at least 5 nodes. • For better rooting, use cutting hormone, and plant in long root trainer or pots filled with a ratio of 1 peat moss: 3 perlites: 1 compost. Leave cutting on a bench with mist irrigation. • Stem rooting can vary from 9–103 days, with average rooting around 41%.
