Dichrostachys cinerea (L.) Wight & Arn.

This species is native to Tropical Africa, Arabian Peninsula, Tropical Asia to N Australia. (Ref. POWO; 2022). There is only one species of Dichrostachys occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Shrub or a small tree ; up to 2 m high , with rough , grey-brown , frequently fissured bark . Stems and branches unarmed but short lateral branches ending in spines , often bearing leaves or flowers ; young branchlets usually ± pubescent , sometimes puberulous or even glabrous . Leaves bipinnate , up to 10 cm long , with 8-15 pairs of pinnae ; each pinna with more 4 than 20 pairs of leaflets ; each leaflet ± 3 mm long , oblong . Inflorescences in axillary spikes . Flowers pendant , the frtile upper part with yellow flowers , the lower neuter with pink-purple flowers ; calyx ± 1 mm , 5-lobed ; corolla 2-3 mm , united below ; stamens 10 , all fertile in bisexual flowers ; staminodes (of neuter flowers) exserted . Fruit pods , twisted and clustered , 3-4 cm , brown , 2-4-seeded . Seeds 4-6 x 3-4 . 5 mm , deep-brown , glossy . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .
