Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet

This species is native to Cape Verde, Tropical & S. Africa, Madagascar, India. (Ref. POWO; 2022). Cultivated throughout the tropics. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There is only one known species of Lablab occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual or short-lived perennial herb ; up to 6 m long . Stems twining , climbing , trailing or erect , pubescent or glabrous . Leaves trifoliolate ; leaflets 2 . 5–15 × 1 . 5–14 cm , alternate , ovate-triangular , acuminate , cuneate to truncate at the base , glabrous or pubescent ; stipules 4–6 mm long , ovate , ribbed . Inflorescences many-flowered racemes , borne on elongated peduncles . Flowers white to blue or purple in colour , c . 1 . 5 cm long , typically papillonaceous in shape ; calyx glabrous or pubescent ; corolla standard entirely crimson or purple , or cream tinged mauve outside and purple inside , or all entirely white , 1 . 2–1 . 5 × 1 . 2–1 . 5 cm , oblate or round , glabrous ; wings white or purple ; keel pale , tinged mauve at the apex . Fruit pod , 3 . 5–14 × 1 . 2–4 cm , linear-oblong to oblong-falcate , beaked , pubescent or glabrescent , bright purple to pale green , 2–5-seeded . Seeds 5–17 × 4–6(9 . 5) × 3–5 . 5 mm , white or red to black , oblong , compressed . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .
