Medicago laciniata var. brachycantha Boiss.

This variety is native to Macaronesia to Ethiopia and Tanzania, S Africa, W & SW Asia, Arabian Peninsula and W Himalaya. (Ref. POWO; 2022). There are 5 species of Medicago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Spreading annual herb ; up to 20 cm high , subglabrous or sparsely pilose . Stems several arising from the base , decumbent to ascending , spreading , glabrous . Leaves 3-foliolate , alternate , petiolate , grey-green ; stipules laciniate , with simple hairs beneath ; leaflets 5-15 x 7-9 mm , dentate , apex truncate to retuse , base cuneate , glabrous above , glabrous on the surface below and sparsely pilose on the midrib . Inflorescences 1–2-flowered , in axillary racemes ; peduncle up to 2 cm long . Flowers yellow , very small ; calyx ± 2 mm , lobes ± 0 . 5 mm , sparsely pilose ; teeth equal , shorter than the tube , hairy ; corolla with standard ± 4 mm , the whole flower well exserted from the calyx ; wings shorter than the keel ; keel blunt , oblong ; upper filament free , the other 9 united .
