This species is native to Macaronesia, Europe to Cacucasus, N & NE Tropical Africa to Arabian Peninsula, Indian Subcontinent to China. (Ref. POWO; 2022); naturalized in central Asia, Japan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, and much of South America. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There are 5 species of Medicago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
Annual or short-lived perennial herb ; up to 50 cm high , with shallow taproot . Stems prostrate or ascending , much branched , light green or reddish green , ± pubescent . Leaves 3-foliolate , alternate ; leaflets cuneate-obovate , pubescent on both surfaces ; stipules green , cordate on the free side at the base , lanceolate , toothed ; petiole very short in the upper leaves , up to 2 . 5 cm in the lower leaves . Inflorescence usually many-flowered in small heads , . Flowers bright yellow , tiny ; calyx pubescent , 1–1 . 5 mm long ; corolla 2 . 5–3 mm long , yellow . Fruit pod , ± 3 by 2 mm , strongly veined , curved through 180° , sparsely pubescent , black when ripe , 1-seeded . Seeds brown , ovoid and smooth . (Ref . POWO ; 2022) .
