This species is native to Macaronesia, Europe to Central Asia and W. Nepal, N. & NE. Tropical Africa to Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2022); widely naturalised. (Ref. https://keyserver.lucidcentral.org). There are 5 species of Medicago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
Annual herb ; up to 25 cm tall , generally glabrous . Stems ± erect to decumbent , weak , branched , sprading , glabrous . Leaves 3-foliolate , green , sometimes tinged purple or reddish ; stipules ± 6 mm , laciniate ; petiole ± 4 cm or shorter ; leaflets 5-15 x 3-10 mm , minutely dentate , apex emarginated to retuse , base tapering , glabrous above , ± glabrous on the surface below and sparsely pilose on the midrib . Inflorescences 1(-2) , in the axils of leaves . Flowers yellow , tiny ; calyx ± 2 mm , lobes ± 0 . 5 mm , sparsely pilose ; corolla with standard ± 4 mm , the whole flower well exserted from the calyx ; upper filament free , the other 9 united . Fruit pod , spherical , 2-3-coiled with hooked spines , pale yellow when mature . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .
