Medicago sativa L.

This species is native to Mediterranean to W Siberia and Iran. (Ref. POWO; 2022); widely cultivated throughout Arabia. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.2). There are 5 species of Medicago found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual or short-lived perennial herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems erect to ascending , branched , ± glabrous . Leaves 3-foliolate , alternate , green ; stipules lanceolate ; leaflets 3-20 x 2-90 mm , obovate to oblong-lanceolate , dentate at the apex , cuneate at the base , appressed pubescent . Inflorescences in dense racemes with 10–35 flowers , on peduncles 1–5 cm long . Flowers violet or pale purple ; calyx 5-lobed , 3–6 mm long , tube and pointed teeth about equal in length ; corolla 7–11 mm long , blue to violet . Fruit orbicular with 1-4 spirals , glabrous , 2–6 seeded . Seeds 1–2 . 5 mm × 1–1 . 5 mm , yellow to brown , kidney-shaped to ovoid . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .
