Melilotus albus Medik.

This species is native to NE Africa westwards through Arabia to China, Turkey and Europe; introduced to America and Australia. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.2). There are 2 species of Melilotus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect , branched annual herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems erect to ascending , branched , green , round or slightly terete , glabrous . Leaves alternate , trifoliolate ; stipules entire ; leaflets 10-20 x 5-10 mm , obovate to oblong , serrate , tip acute , base tapering , somewhat blue-green or gray-green . Inflorescences in many-flowered racemes in leaf axils and at the end of branches ; peduncle up to ± 4 cm . Flowers small , white , becoming deflexed in fruit ; calyx pale green , ± 2 mm , teeth narrowly deltoid , ± unequal , glabrous or somewhat appressed-hairy ; corolla white , with standard ± 4 mm , ± twice as long as the calyx ; upper filament free , the other 9 united Fruit pod , 3-5 mm , ovoid to subglobose , reticulately veined , glabrous , ± brown when mature . Seeds ovoid , smooth . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .
