Melilotus indicus (L.) All.

This species is native to Mediterranean to Central Asia and Indian Subcontinent (Ref. POWO; 2022); introduced in many warm temperate areas. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.2). There are 2 species of Melilotus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 50 cm high , with mild perfume scented fragrance , glabrous to sparsely hairy . Stems erect to ascending , unbranched , slender , pubescent . Leaves alternate , trifoliolate ; petiole 15-30 mm ; stipules dentate ; leaflets 8-22 x 3-12 mm , obovate to oblanceolate , dentate , tips blunt or indented , base tapering , margins serrated , glabrous above , ± glabrous beneath , pilose on the midrib below . Inflorescences in slender , compact racemes ; peduncle up to 3 cm . Flowers small ; calyx ± 2 mm ; corolla pale yellow , 2–3 mm long ; wings and keel equal , shorter than standard . Fruit pods , 1 . 5-4 mm , ovoid to subglobose , prominently reticulately veined , green to brownish , glabrous , 1-seeded . Seeds ovoid , finely verrucose . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .

الاستخدامات


As fooder for goats treated as alfalfa. The vernacular name 'khouiat al qat' literally means "alfalfa's sister", refers to the fact that both species found associated together in cultivation. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
