Tree or a large shrub ; up to 3 m tall , very spiny , with rounded crown and fissured , brown bark . Stems many ; young branchlets grey or greyish brown , glabrous or almost so ; prickles (just below the nodes) 2 or 3 , curving downwards or straight , dark tipped and reaching to 5 mm . Leaves with 3 pairs of pinnae , placed distantly ; leaflets 6-8 pairs , 3-5 x 2 mm , oblong , grey-green . Inflorescences in up to 4 cm long spikes . Flowers white ; calyx 1-2 mm , 5-lobed ; corolla 5-lobed . Fruit pod , 4-6 x ± 2 . 5 cm , compressed , yellow-green tinged purple when young , yellow-brown when mature , dehiscent , 2-3-seeded .
