Vicia faba L.

This species is native to north Africa and southwest Asia, and extensively cultivated elsewhere. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There are 4 species of Vicia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

An erect , robust annual herb ; growing up to 2 m tall . Stems stout , with a square cross-section . Leaves alternate , 10-25 cm long ; each leaf is paripinnate , composed of 2-6 leaflets , glaucous , grey-green . Inflorescences in1-6 flowered axillary racemes , 1-2 . 5 cm long . Flowers white with a black spot ; petals white marked with a central basal dark brown or black blotch . Fruit pod , narrowly oblong , cylindrical to laterally flattened , leathery , green maturing blackish-brown , with a densely downy surface , 3-8 seeded . Seeds up to 20-25 mm long , ovoid to oblong , compressed , brown to reddish or green . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
