Vicia sativa L.

This species is native to North Africa, Western Asia and Europe, but is now naturalized in temperate and subtropical regions worldwide. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There are 4 species of Vicia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Straggling or ascending annual herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems ascending , trailing , downy when young , angular , glabrescent . Leaves alternate , paripinnate , rachis ending in a branched tendril ; petiole up to 10 mm ; stipules 3 . 5-6 mm , triangular , dentate ; leaflets 6-15 x 2-6 mm , oblong to oblong-ovate , margins entire , apex obtuse or emarginated , apiculate , base acute . Inflorescences 1–2 in the axils of leaves , ± sessile . Flowers dark purple ; calyx 10-12 mm , tube slightly gibbous above , lobes subequal , linear , acute , villous ; corolla with standard petal ± 18 mm , ovate , narrowing to a claw ; upper free , the other 9 united . Fruit pod , 30-60 x 8-10 mm , flattened , linear-oblong , beaked , ± glabrous , valves twisting after dehiscence . Seeds 2 . 5–6 mm in diameter , usually dark brown , subglobose , smooth . (Ref . الاستخدامات


The pods boiled with little salt. The seeds eaten as beans. Also, the seeds were used as a shampoo, in which it helps to get rid of dandruff. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
