A large , pyramidal-rounded to broad-columnar deciduous tree ; up to 35 m tall , with a substantial trunk . Stems with young branches olive-green but quickly turn reddish-brown ; bark often has a net-like pattern with deep grooves running up the trunk . Leaves dark green , oblong-lanceolate , boldly serrated or toothed margins , each leaf having about 20 pairs of prominent parallel veins . Inflorescences borne in 10–20 cm long , upright catkins . Flowers tiny , densely-clustered , monoecious , with male flowers in the upper part and female flowers in the lower portion . Fruit cupules (spiny protective husks) , prickly .
