An erect leafy herb ; up to 25 cm tall , with shallow and fibrous roots . Stems erect to ascending , much branched at base , square , green to purple , soft , finely hairy . Leaves opposite , rounded , palmately veined , lobed margin ; lower leaves petiolated , rounded to heart-shaped , with rounded teeth ; upper leaves sessile , deeply lobed , encircling the stem at the base . Inflorescences a few-flowered terminal spike with axillary whorls . Flowers rosy-purple , in whorls , non aromatic ; calyx regular with five lobes ; corolla purplish-red , fused into a tube 15 to 20 mm long , upper lip convex , lower lip with three lobes ; stamens 4 .
