Mentha longifolia (L.) L.

This species is native to Europe, western and central Asia, and northern and southern Africa; introduced and cultivated elsewhere. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There are 3 species of Mentha found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Aromatic , perennial herb ; up to 50 m tall , with musty scent , and spreading rhizomes . Stems erect , branched , quadrangular , white- or grey-villous . Leaves opposite , sessile or with short petioles , 4-11 x 1-4 cm , lanceolate or oblanceolate or oblong-elliptic , base truncate or rounded , apex acute , margins irregularly serrate , smooth or slightly rugose especially near base , green , ± above , villous beneath , with scattered sessile glands , veins conspicuous beneath ; petiole 0-1 . 5 mm . Inflorescences of terminal branched spikes , verticils congested ; bracteoles narrowly linear-elliptic . Flowers bisexual and female , pedicellate , lilac , purplish , or white ; calyx 2-3 mm , camanulate , pubescent and with sessile glands ; lobes ± 1 mm , subequal subulate , acute ; corolla pale purple or white , 4-lobed , lobes spreading , subequal ; upper lobe shallowly 2-lobed ; corolla tube ± cylindrical , usually included within calyx ; stamens exserted , or included in functionally female plants . Fruit nutlets dark brown , sparsely hairy in upper half . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .

الاستخدامات


Mixed with fruits (grape, apricot, peach,..etc.) grown in mountain oases in date-plam made basket 'mishan'. It protect the fragile fruit from being crushed and give a fresh smell. (Ref,. Oman Botanic Garden).
