Zataria multiflora Boiss.

This species is native to Arabian Peninsula (Oman), Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan (Baluchistan, Chitral), and West Himalaya. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Zataria occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Subshrub ; up to 45 cm tall . Stems leafless , woody based , much branched , young stems erect , densely white eglandular pilose , aromatic . Leaves opposite , 5-10 x 5-10 mm , grey-green , broadly ovate to orbicular , base rounded to cuneate , apex obtuse , margins entire , white pubescent when young , glabrescent , gland dotted on both surfaces . Inflorescences of congested verticils , 8-10-flowered ; bracts narrow oblong ; pedicels 1-2 mm . Flowers often male-sterile , white ; calyx grey-green , tubular , ± 2 mm , teeth ± equal , densely eglandular pilose , hairs spreading , with many red oil globules ; corolla white , 2-lipped , 3 mm , scarcely exceeding the calyx , pilose with oil globules externally ; upper lip 2-lobed , lower lip 3-lobed ; stamens 4 , not exserted . Fruit nutlets , ovoid , smooth , only one developing . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .

Fine powder of dried pounded leaves added to goat’s milk for flavor. Recently used as drink or very often mixed with tea. (Ref. Oman botanic Garden). In Omani studies: Ghazanfar (2015) wrote that: "Known by the local people as za'ater [Arabic for thyme], and used in traditional medicine for stomach problems and colic". (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol. 3).
