Strychnos nux-vomica L.

This species is native to India, and to southeast Asia. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There is only one species of Strychnos occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

A medium-sized deciduous tree . Stems and branches irregular ; trunk short , thick with dense , hard , white , wood . Leaves opposite , simple , orbicular to ovate , 5-nerved , glabrous . Inflorescences many-flowered terminal cymes . Flowers small , white or pale green , funnel shape ; calyx 5-lobed , pubescent , small , c . 2 mm ; corolla 5-lobes , corolla tube cylindrical , greenish white inside , slightly hairy near the base ; stamens 5 ; filaments short . Fruit berry , smooth , thick shelled , orange-red when ripe . Seeds flat , compressed , covered with fine grey hairs . (Ref . https://Vikaspedia . in)

Ghazanfar (2015) wrote that: "Cultivated in Dhofar for the seeds that have been used in traditional medicine". (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.3). However, reported that the seeds are the major source of the highly poisonous, intensely bitter alkaloids strychine and brucine. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org).
