Ammannia baccifera L.

This species is native to NE Africa, Arabia, Tropical & Subtropical Asia, and Australia. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Ammannia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect , very branched annual herb with square stems ; up to 40 cm high . Stems erect to ascending , unbranched , often woody below , somewhat 4-angled , reddish , glabrous . Leaves opposite , 9-35 x 3-6 mm , oblanceolate to oblon-lanceolate , sessile , often drooping , apex acute , base rounded to subcordate , margins entire , 1-nerved , reflexed . Inflorescences clustered in the leaf axils along the length of the stem , sessile ; peduncles ± 1 mm . Flowers small , ± 1 . 2 mm long , greenish or purplish ; hypanthium cup-shaped , ± 1 mm , including calyx-lobes ; lobes triangular ; sinus horns obscure ; petals absent or rarely present then minute ; stamens 4 , included in the sepals ; ovary globose , ± 1 . 5 mm in diameter ; style ± equaling the stamens . Fruit capsule , globose , red , ± 2 mm in diameter , just exceeding the calyx lobes , dehiscing irregularly . Seeds c . 0 . 4 mm long , yellowish brown . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 2) .
