An annual , biennial or short-lived perennial herb ; up to 1–2 . 5 m tall , with wide-spread root system . Stems unbranched or sparingly branched , light green , terete , more or less hairy . Leaves alternate , compound , palmately lobed (with 3-7 blunt lobes each) , margins crenate ; leaf blade orbicular or oval in outline , indented at the base , upper surface slightly pubescent to hairless , wrinkled from fine veins ; the lower surface is light green and pubescent . Inflorescences solitary or in small clusters , borne in spike-like raceme , pedicels very short . Flowers showy , actinomorphic , 5–10 cm wide , in a range of colours from white to dark red , including pink , yellow and orange ; calyx 5-lobed ; sepals light green , ovate ; petals 4-5 ; stamens numerous , stalks grown together , surrounding the pistil like a tube ; pistil of several fused carpels .
