Corchorus depressus (L.) Peterm.

This species is native to Macaronesia, and to India. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 4 species of Corchorus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Prostrate , annual or woody perennial herb ; up to 30 cm tall , forming a dense mat . Stems glabrous to sparsely pubescent with prostrate woody branches . Leaves alternate , 5-15 x 4-4 . 5 mm , subsessile , dark green , ovate to ovate-oblong , undulate margins , acute to subacute apex . Inflorescences in 1-2(-3)-flowered glabrous clusters , axillary . Flowers bright yellow , small , ± 5 mm across ; sepals 5 , yellowish-green , linear-oblong , glabrous , falling soon ; petals 5 , free , open in the afternoon ; stamens 10-15 , erect . Fruit capsule , 10-15 mm , cylindrical , woody , 4-locular . Seeds 1-1 . 5 mm long , very finely reticulate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .

الاستخدامات


The root is edible. Goats browsed on upper part – leaves and fruits. In the Central Desert, the plant is well known as sexual irritant for women. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
