A robust , erect , annual herb or short-lived perennial ; up to 2 m high , with a woody base , mainly glabrous . Stems erect , glabrescent or glabrous , aint red-brownish . Leaves alternate , 4-10 x 1-4 cm , lanceolate-elliptic , serrate margin , acuminate to acute apex , rounded base , petiolate . Inflorescences solitary or in 1(–2)-flowered clusters ; axillary . Flowers yellow , small , about 8 mm across ; sepals 5 , linear , distinctly ciliolate at base , falling soon ; petals 5 , free , oblanceolate ; stamens 25–50 ; ovary minutely setulose . Fruit capsule , 5-10 cm , cylindrical , straight or slightly curved , 10-angled , 5-locular , glabrous and smooth , dehiscing by 5 valves .
