Erect , annual or perennial herb ; up to 50 cm tall , with a woody base . Stems erect , branching or sometimes with decumbent branches , often purplish , glabrescent . Leaves alternate , 1-4 x 0 . 6-2 cm , simple , ovate to ovate-oblong , acute or subacute apex , serrate margin , rounded or broadly cuneate base , petiolate . Inflorescences of 1–3-flowered cymes borne opposite the upper leaves . Flowers yellow , large , bisexual , about 6 mm across ; sepals 5 , narrowly lanceolate , glabrous to sparsely pilose , falling soon ; petals 5 , free , oblanceolate ; stamens 30–40 ; ovary trigonously subcylindric , with few to many tufted hairs . Fruit capsule , 2-4 cm , cylindrical , straight or slightly curved , 3-locular , 3-winged , many-seeded . Seeds 1–1 . 3 × 0·7–1 mm . , oblong-ovoid , smooth , dark brown . (Ref .
