Gossypium herbaceum L.

This species is native to the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa and Arabia; introduced and naturalised elsewhere. (Ref. https://en.wikipedia.org). There are 4 species of Gossypium found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Shrub ; up to 2 m tall , irregularly dotted with black oil glands . Stems few , thick , rigid , usually covered with long spreading simple hairs . Leaves spirally arranged , gland-dotted , 2–6 x 2–7 cm , 3–5-lobed , cordate at the base , glabrescent above , stellate pubescent beneath ; lobes entire , ± ovate-oblong , usually constricted at the base ; petiole 20–35 mm long . Inflorescences solitary , axillary ; pedicels 7–30 mm long . Flowers small , yellow with a purple center ; epicalyx bracts ovate-cordate , up to c . 3 . 5 x 3 . 5 cm , with 4–6 lanceolate teeth on each side , gland-dotted ; calyx 5–10 mm long , gland-dotted ; teeth low , broadly triangular ; petals 2 . 5–4 cm long , yellow with dark red base ; stamens numerous , forming a antheriferous column throughout , filaments short , anthers 1-celled ; pistil with 3–5-celled ovary and one short style , stigma entire , rarely cleft at the top .
